There's a Michael Jackson song that came on my iPod today as I was walking the dog. It's called "Jam". Let me just give clear disclosure that I love Michael Jackson more than any other artist that's alive or ever will live. Just ask Paige...
With that being said, I have VIVID memories of being 4 or 5 years old with this CD playing in my parents room while I was jumping on the bed and screaming "DAMN!" (a bad word) in place of where he says "Jam". I felt so naughty! Damn you, Michael and your black shoes and white socks that moved me to swearing.
Watch the video here. Sure, the first minute is a nightmare for people who get motion sickness, and yes, there's a cameo from Michael Jordan where he awkwardly teaches Jackson how to dribble while Jackson teaches him the "crotch grab twirl" dance move, but the 8 minute message is clear: it ain't too much [for Michael Jackson] to jam.
In the song, he talks about a lot of heavy stuff that plagued the 90s - end of the world, false prophets, people obsessing over his legal issues, baby boomers taking over, and even neighbors not doing favors for each other {gasp}. But through all that, he says about 1 million times that it ain't too much to jam. I think it was a good choice since "It ain't too much for me to handle" doesn't have the same ring to it.
I found a weird strength come over me as I jammed out to "Jam" and made my dog walk into more of a moon walk.
There are so many obstacles for an adult who decides to drop everything and change their career. I've found this transitional period to be very stressful (you're probably like, "shut up, you're unemployed sitting at home in your pajamas watching "Dog Whisperer" reruns none of us feel bad for you we all hate our jobs and still go to work everyday what a wimp you are get a grip!" and to you I say, "touche" but also "follow your dreams, man."). I am also someone who likes (read "needs") to plan things, make lists, be organized and efficient in completing those lists, and make achievable goals. Sometimes you don't get to plan as you'd hoped, so it's easy to get overwhelmed by the tasks that need completing to move forward.
So, like any normal list-maker would do, I've made a list of things I need to do to get going and then I'm going to JAM out all the ones I've already completed...making more of a "to-done" list instead of a "to-do".
1) quit job - JAMMED
2) stress over money - JAMMED
3) have spousal meeting discussing new budget - JAMMED
4) decide on what school I'm going to - JAMMED (It's Point Loma Nazarene Univ. I have a meeting about their program tonight which you can read more about if you care here.)
5) talk to lots of teachers and feel really awesome about my decision - JAMMED
6) sign up for the CBEST - JAMMED (taking June 20!)
7) find joy in this time off - JAMMED Change from being in transition to being in relaxistion. Not a word, but also not many people get a chance to redefine who they are. I'm very lucky and blessed and need to make sure I cherish this time I have.
8) study for and pass CBEST - It ain't too much for me to jam (IATMFMTJ)
9) finalize PLNU Master's program application - IATMFMTJ
10) be the best, most supportive wife I can be while Kirk financially supports us through this time -IATMFMTJ
11) get some of dat school cheddah from the government by writing and deserving student loans and/or scholarships - IATMFMTJ
12) be honest to myself about expectations, giving myself time to grow, mature, and become the person and teacher that I am striving for - IATMFMTJ
13) stop eating so much chipotle - wait, what?
What things in your life have seemed too much to jam? Just remember, if MJ can teach the other MJ how to "shoulder bump side to side while crouched" dance, then you can pretty much handle anything that life throws your way.

to do or not to do
So instead of the regular "Reasons why I'm blogging" inaugural post, let's just say I'm doing this to NOT do other things (ie study, clean house, grocery store). Yes, in general, this blog will chronicle The Martinsen Clan (Kirk, me, Riggins the dog), but mostly it will follow me....like crazed a Beiber fan. It will be fun and by fun I mean marginal times.
As most of the 0 people following this blog know, I've recently decided to become a slave to the youth of America. I hereby promise to teach them the difference between your and you're, their and they're and there, and to not use "epic" in a sentence ever. A teacher. "Why?" 0 of you are asking? Because I said so (See, I'm a natural). I will be detailing my journey from working woman back to student back to working woman again....a transition that is sure to tantalize your senses.
Kirk is also a slave (to the government) and has been traveling about half of every month since February, so this blog will be keeping me company while he's away. And will give me something to do. Ba dum DUM psht! (comedic drum noise)
So the main point is: take regular happy/amazing life, subtract job, subtract money, subtract 1/2 of husband, plus 1 dog, plus major life change, plus inordinate amount of Star Trek watching, minus a daily shower equals this blog.
Hope 0 of you stick around to see this adventure through!
